Baalbek-Hermel covers the northern Beqaa, from the city of Baalbek to El Hermel near the source of the Orontes, known locally as the Assi. Its capital is Baalbek, famous for the Roman temple complex — including the Temple of Bacchus — a UNESCO World Heritage site. The two cazas are Baalbek and El Hermel. The governorate is drier and more inland than the coast, with wide plains, the Anti-Lebanon to the east, and the road north toward the border at Hermel.
